Space Defendar is the experience for this release. We’ll release more experiences in the coming months. Later this year, users will be able to create their own AR experiences using the same app and then things will get interesting.
My journey with the Niantic started 3 years ago. Fate said, “Leverage your network and free software.” so I opened up twitter and saw a tweet from @Joe_Gabriel. He was going to give a webinar the next day about Lightship ARDK. This would let users put content in real world locations. It seemed interesting, so I attended. I’ve been hooked ever since.
This version of the app is severely feature deficient. I turned off the UI elements to choose a VPS location, start a multiplayer game session, begin a multiplayer collaboration session and even in-app purchases. Why? Because people aren’t ready for those things yet. They still need help just realizing they can move around and rotate while playing an AR game. We’re going to need to do a lot of training and hand holding for the near term, then we can gradually add those features back in.
Yes, the gameplay will be made better in the coming weeks cuz it’s not so exciting once the amazement of shooting spaceships wears off. To be fair though, I still think it’s pretty cool to shoot them though. LOL This is a soft launch, just to prove to folks that we could be live on the App Store. We’ll do a hard launch once the gameplay is stepped up a bit.
