Questions about the just announced NSDK for Swift

Note that the Swift documentation mentions “AR Foundation”, but I think this is just a copy/paste error from the Unity docs.

I also had some questions about the new Swift NSDK. Is the goal eventual feature parity with the Unity SDK (including Shared AR)? Any timelines for production release, even if just approximations (i.e. late 2026). Will this SDK be completely open source? If so, will this be the full SDK or like the Unity one with its chunk of precompiled C++ code?

I’m very excited about this, because Unity adds 500 MBs to my app’s size and can’t wait to ditch that if possible.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for pointing out the AR Foundation typo! We’ll get that fixed ASAP.

To address your other questions:

  • The current goal is to have as much feature parity as possible between the Unity, Swift and Kotlin SDKs with what you see in 3.17. The only caveat is Shared AR where the future of this is not yet set. Are you looking to potentially use SharedAR with the Swift or Kotlin SDKs?

  • The current plan is to have a production release sometime within the first half of 2026

  • The SDK is not open source, it will however be like the Unity one in that the code that provides the integration with our native library is available to view and developers are able to modify or replace that code (while following the licensing terms and restrictions) with their own.

My Remixing Reality has been evolving.

Currently, I find that the average consumer doesn’t quite “get” AR in the sense of what AR means (“You mean AI?”) and how it works (“What do you mean walk around? Oh….wow, that’s magical.”

Therefore, I’m moving away from calling it AR or Spatial Computing, and am instead saying “Here’s a fun way to make videos.” All the multiplayer functionality and shared AR features from past versions of the app are still there, and I’ll be re-introducing those features throughout 2026 as users become more and more accustomed to AR and how it works.

That’s why I was asking if Shared AR would still be coming to the native SDKs as well.

Keep up the good work and check out my app! It wouldn’t have been made if it wasn’t for your and the teams hardwork.
