Question about MP4 vs INSV processing time

Hi Scaniverse Team,

We have a question regarding processing times for 360 video uploads.

So far, we have uploaded several native INSV files from a 360 camera. These files were relatively large and typically took between 4 and 9 hours to process, but the resulting Gaussian Splats were generally successful and of good quality.

We are now running a small test using a much shorter clip: a 15-second MP4 file exported from the original 360 footage. The file size is approximately 312 MB.

What surprises us is that this MP4 test has already been processing for more than 5 hours and still has not completed.

Could you help us understand the technical differences between processing a native INSV file and a converted MP4 file?

Specifically:

  • Does Scaniverse treat MP4 files differently from native INSV files during reconstruction?

  • Are there metadata, camera calibration, gyro, or stitching-related differences that affect processing time?

  • Could exporting to MP4 remove information that makes reconstruction more difficult?

  • Is it normal for a short 15-second MP4 clip to take as long or longer than a much larger native INSV recording?

We are trying to determine whether this behavior is expected or whether there may be an issue with the uploaded file.

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards,

Hi Jorge,

Thanks for reaching out. Let me check with our Scaniverse team regarding this and get back to you once I have additional information.

I’m sorry for the delay in getting back to you on your questions.

  • Does Scaniverse treat MP4 files differently from native INSV files during reconstruction?

Yes. I’m unable to speak on the exact details, but the information stored in INSV files helps create sharper and more accurate 3d reconstructions than using a stitched MP4 equirectangular video

  • Are there metadata, camera calibration, gyro, or stitching-related differences that affect processing time?

Nope

  • Could exporting to MP4 remove information that makes reconstruction more difficult?

Yes it could

  • Is it normal for a short 15-second MP4 clip to take as long or longer than a much larger native INSV recording?

Yes it’s normal. However, this could be for a number of reasons, so It’s hard to say why. Regardless we always recommend staying up to date on Scaniverse and processing your content on the latest version as the 360 scan feature is very new, and our engineers continue working towards improving processing speeds.
