Today I tried to scan my first Gaussian Splat with Scaniverse, and was disheartened to discover that my 2021 Moto Power G does not have enough GPU. Obviously the solution is for Niantic to offload heavy processing requirements from device. Users should just be capturing video. Then either that video gets processed on your end, or you provide a Desktop client so we can use our PC GPUs. In fact I am surprised this is not the way it works already. Maybe there is an option I missed? Also I want to salute your team for some thoughtful UX like the ability to use the Scaniverse app without a network connection, and not having to log in. Keep up the good work!
Hi Alex,
Thanks for reaching out. I’m sorry to hear you weren’t able to complete a Gaussian Splat with your Android device. While this functionality may not be supported on your device, you can still capture impressive scans using photogrammetry mode.
Currently, all processing is handled on the device that captured the scan, and the app does not support offloading that workload to another device. With that said, I really appreciate your feedback; your suggestion about offloading splat processing is a great one, and I’ll be sure to pass it along to the team.
Happy Scanning!
