Seeking advice: Scanning a large bridge for Lightship VPS

Hello everyone,

I hope I’m in the right place!

I’m a student at Technische Hochschule Brandenburg and we are working on an exciting AR project for tourism in our city, Brandenburg an der Havel. Our goal is to develop an AR application based on the Lightship Visual Positioning System (VPS).

Specifically, we want to integrate the Jahrtausendbrücke (Millennium Bridge) in Brandenburg (14776) as a Public VPS, so that it can be recognized from different viewpoints.

However, we have reached our limits here: It has proven very difficult to scan a large structure like the bridge completely with a mobile phone and the Scaniverse app. The current status of the VPS for this bridge is unfortunately not usable.

My question to the community: Are there alternative or more efficient methods to create a Public VPS for a large, public structure like a bridge? Through the university, we have access to professional equipment such as a LiDAR scanner and drones. Could this equipment be used to capture the necessary data?

Any tips or exchange of experiences would be super helpful for our project. We are very much looking forward to your ideas!

Thank you for reaching out and for your interest! Your project sounds incredibly exciting, and it’s great to hear about the ambitious ideas you’re exploring.

While Scaniverse doesn’t currently support external scanners like the LiDAR scanner you mentioned, one creative option could be to use a drone with your smartphone attached to help capture the scans from different angles.

If a drone isn’t available, you can still achieve great results by scanning the bridge in smaller sections. It may take a bit more work, but it’s a proven approach that many users have had success with.
